I am frankly suprised that no-one has challenged the listing of so many names under this category. The idea of a 'Roman' Catholic only emerged in the 16th alongside the Reformation - with a distinction for those Christians that were obedient to the Bishop of Rome (the 'Pope'). To describe someone living in the 12th century as a 'Roman Catholic Monarch' is misleading. A Catholic monarch perhaps. Contaldo80 (talk) 09:18, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic or Western Catholic is fine. Roman Catholic doesn't make sense. The wiki article on Roman Catholicism says as much. We are being inconsistent and confusing people. Roman Catholicism emerges through the Council of Trent in response to the rise of protestantism. Many protestants saw themselves and continue to see themselves as catholics in the pre-reformation sense. Contaldo80 (talk) 09:39, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We are not confusing anyone. It is the modern day appellation for the continued church that they adhered to then, and is used in scholarly sources and it is what readers search for in this context. We would have to rename just about every article on older religions, as for example Norse paganism, Ancient Greek Religion, to some obscure names that hardly anyone would understand or be able to navigate around in if we began changing names on account of that. The fact that they changed names is covered in the main articles of these religions, so there is no need to rename the categories which mainly exist for ease of navigation and categorisation of similar subjects. --Saddhiyama (talk) 12:08, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nonsense. It is simply misleading to label everyone in the western church a Roman Catholic before the reformation. It is not even a term that the Roman Catholic church uses. It is wrong to say that the Roman Catholic church is the continuation of the pre-reformation Western Catholic church: it is merely one continuation of the tradition and there are others. And what value is the category anyway - is it essential to know that people were 'Roman Catholic monarchs'? I can't see that it adds a great deal of value.
