A small request

[edit]

I am starting with my own wiki. I am completely new and have no clue how the tempates work. I would like to 'copy&paste' some of the great templates here, but I have no clue, which code I should copy and paste…could you please always add a box at the bottom with the text of the template itself? For instance, I would like to use the nutshell, but the only thing I see in the edit page are dozens of these { and these } - what am I supposed to use? Thanks! --Jorgusch (talk) 18:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Category:Template documentation" versus "Category:Template documentation pages"

[edit]

What is the difference between this category, Category:Template documentation, and Category:Template documentation pages? Thanks!SpikeToronto 06:05, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good question, Spike, my friend! The category says at the top "This category contains template documentation subpages." - but that's misleading and almost a fib: one of its subcategories contains next to nothing, while a subcategory of the other one contains over 20,000 template documentation subpages, but the category itself contains very few subpages, with only a couple of them being standard "/doc" pages (which probably should be with the other 20,000 rather than here). There should be a more comprehensive description of what the category contains, or a significant restructuring. I think there's a risk of confusion as things are at present. Commons and Wikia have a simpler category structure in this area: most of their "/doc" pages are simply in the category with the same name as this, not in one that adds the uninformative word "pages" to its name. Template documentation subpages

[edit]

According to this category, Category:Template documentation, it, "contains template documentation subpages." However, according to Category:Template documentation pages, that category, "contains template documentation subpages." Either the template documentation of these two templates needs clarification or they should be merged. Hyacinth (talk) 02:02, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hyacinth, fixed: Special:Diff/681227533/858707713. —andrybak (talk) 09:21, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @SpikeToronto, Robin Patterson, Hyacinth, and Andrybak: You were contributer of the both sections above regarding this topic. I was bold and created a new subcategory only for the templates Category:Documentation templates (similar to commons:Category:Documentation templates). Now the old Category:Template documentation can be used for template documentation pages and documentation templates. If you agree, now only the connected wikidata items need to be updated. PS.: See also next section. Best Regards --W like wiki good to know 00:44, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems good to me. Thanks for being bold. Robin Patterson (talk) 09:41, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How are these both related to each other? Should they be merged or is Category:Template documentation part of Category:Wikipedia template help. Best Regards --W like wiki good to know 00:52, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's fine to keep them separate. The split is a pretty clear "help pages for when you don't yet know what templates are in general" versus "technical documentation for parameters and behavior of individual templates". —andrybak (talk) 09:46, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
