Inclusion in navy categories[edit]

I've added this to the categories of all navies which have lost warships with all hands.

Note that warships lost with all hands in combat will be in the sub-category Category:Warships lost in combat with all hands, so I don't see the value to adding the navy categories to that sub-category, since one can come here to get to them. However, I don't have a strong feeling on that; if people want to add them there too, I'm fine with that.

Ditto on having that be a sub-category of this one, as opposed to a sibling category (in which case it would have to be included in all the navy categories); logically, that's a sub-set of this one, which is why I arranged it that way, and all vessels lost in combat with all hands will go in that one, and shouldn't be included here. But, again, I don't have a strong feeling on that; if people want to make them sibling categories, I'm fine with that also. Noel (talk) 13:34, 15 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I added this category to national navy categories for ease of use; is someone looks at Category:Ships of the French Navy, they (before the recent edit) would have seen that the French navy had ships that were lost with all hands. I'm not sure what you mean by "defining". Categories are, to me, just an information-finding tool; not an end in themselves. The category structure doesn't have to be a perfect hierarchical tree; it might make sense, for finding things, to have category A appear in both categories B and C. (E.g. Category:IBM_Mainframes.)

How else would one easily be able to find out if the {foo} navy had lost ship(s) with all hands? Yes, I suppose one could look at each entry in Category:Warships lost with all hands, but that could get tedious.

Categories should reflect their category tree as well. Placing it in a category tree for the navies of the United States, Israel, etc leads to the assumption that all contents of the category were parts of these national navies. And the scope of the category you created seems to cover warships of any affiliation across history. If the {foo} has lost multiple ships with all hands, these could be the topic of a list or a subcategory. Dimadick (talk) 22:04, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
