Naming?[edit]

@BrownHairedGirl: Hi there, I just realized I had put a couple pages in Category:Wikimedia New York City accidentally, which is reserved for articles (but has no articles -- just a redirect, although I suppose some others like AfroCrowd and Art+Feminism could go in there).

Meanwhile, the many Wikimedia New York City [by year] are subcategories of Category:Wikipedia and Wikimedia New York City, where the contents are entirely about Wikimedia New York City. And there doesn't seem to be any natural home for pages about Wikimedia New York City, unless it all goes in the unintuitive "Wikipedia and..." category.

I'm curious if there was a particular example that led to the "Wikipedia and Wikimedia" chapters (which seems to imply that there are Wikipedia chapters, and which doesn't seem to reflect the content of that category in the examples I looked at)? I appreciate the need to separate project pages and articles, but feel like there must be a better way? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:36, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rhododendrites:, a year or so back I put some time into fixing the namespace pollution that was happening here, with pages in in the WP: namespace jumbled up with encyclopedic articles about WMF chapters.
Th result is that in the NYC case we have Category:Wikipedia and Wikimedia New York City for the WP namespace stuff, and Category:Wikimedia New York City for the actual articles. Similar splits exist for other chapters.
I agree that it's not very intuitive, but it's an unavoidable consequence of the intersection of three issues:
  1. We have some WMF chapters&meetups (or their activities) are sufficiently WP:Notable to have actual encylopedic articles
  2. We also have administration pages about those WMF chapters&meetups
  3. Content categories should contain only article pages.
I think that some terminological pain is inevitable here, and I there current terminology is of course not ideal. Better suggestion welcome. But I am not clear exactly what difficulties you are experiencing. Please can you link to some examples of pages that cause concern for you? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:24, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking the time to explain. I wouldn't say I'm actually experiencing a difficulty. I just realized there was no natural home for the main Wikimedia NYC page, since that category name was taken. It's not a big deal though, and I don't have any suggestion that wouldn't create an exception. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 11:35, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
