Purpose of name prefix?[edit]

@DePiep: - Can anyone explain why this category is necessary, yet a comparable category wasn't Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 December 6#Category:Articles that mention a specific track gauge? Andy Dingley (talk) 19:28, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why you're pinging DePiep - this category was created by @Tim!, and I'd also like to know the purpose of this category. Optimist on the run (talk) 20:03, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can not explain,
I don't understand this section title, please clarify, and
I don't understand the phrase "yet a comparable category wasn't ...", please explain.

It's a category for "eponymous" UK railway line categories, a subcat of the existing Category:Wikipedia categories named after railway lines. The rather unusual name is a result of this CFD. Tim! (talk) 17:53, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why should any category be named "Category named after <foo>" rather than simply "<Foo>s"? Why isn't this just Railway lines in the United Kingdom?
My reason for posting here, and for pinging DePiep, was that a recent CfD (which I didn't agree with) deleted another set of "railway maintenance categories". Are such categories (evidently useful) forbidden here? Or is there some cunning mantra to having them preserved? Andy Dingley (talk) 18:30, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As Andy says. No, has no relation to the recent Track gauges CfD. The only reason I can think of is that these are administrative (hidden) categories, next to plain content categories named Railway lines in the United Kingdom. Prefix "Wikipedia" then hinting to the admin setting (a bad hint). List: Special:PrefixIndex/Category:Wikipedia categories_named_after. So far I'm not happy with this naming pattern. -DePiep (talk) 12:25, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If there is to be a functional and managerial difference indicated by name, then "Maintenance categories named after ..." would be a better pattern. If they're on :en:WP, then they're all "Wikipedia categories". Andy Dingley (talk) 12:32, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is the bad hint thing. Next question: apart from its name, is this category a useful maintenance category? Looks like a copy of the content category. Does it have a special population trick? -DePiep (talk) 12:58, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Same for
Category:Wikipedia categories named after North American Class I railroads
Category:Wikipedia categories named after North American passenger railroads
Category:Wikipedia categories named after railway lines
Category:Wikipedia categories named after railway lines in Norway
Category:Wikipedia categories named after railway lines in Sweden
Category:Wikipedia categories named after railway lines in the United Kingdom

Looks like a CfD i sneeded to clear this up. -DePiep (talk) 10:39, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
