From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overview

[edit]

Chesterton Middle School was a public middle school located in Chesterton, Indiana. It served the educational needs of students in grades 7 and 8. The school was known for its commitment to academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. It sat at 651 W Morgan Ave, Chesterton, IN 46304.

History

[edit]

Chesterton Middle School was established to cater to the growing educational demands of the Chesterton community. Over the years, the school became a cornerstone of the community, providing quality education and fostering the development of young minds.

Closure

[edit]

In 2024, Chesterton Middle School closed its doors due to falling into disrepair. The decision was part of a broader strategy by the Duneland School Corporation to open two new additions to the already existing Liberty Intermediate and Westchester Intermediate schools, which housed grades 5-6.[1]

Legacy

[edit]

Chesterton Middle School, originally built in 1924 as Chesterton High School, served the community for nearly a century. It became Chesterton Middle School in 2001 after the high school relocated to a new building. Over its years of operation, the school was known for its strong academic programs, dedicated staff, and vibrant student life.

The last principal, Mike Hamacher, led the school with a focus on excellence and community involvement. The final classes to pass through its halls were the 7th-grade class of 2029 and the 8th-grade class of 2028.

Despite its closure in 2024 due to disrepair, Chesterton Middle School left a lasting impact on the community. The building is set to be demolished in late 2024 to make way for a brand new YMCA Healthy Living Campus.[2] The school's legacy continues through the achievements of its alumni and the memories cherished by former students and staff.
