Chimele Usuwa Abengowe (1928–2023) was a Nigerian Professor of Medicine. He was a specialist cardiologist and consultant physician and practiced in Nigeria between 1956 and 2023.[1] For his humanitarian and academic services to Nigeria, he was bestowed with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (OON) by President Olusegun Obasanjo on the 16th November, 2000.

Early Years and Education

Abengowe was born on Tuesday, 16th October, 1928 at Umuakwu, Isiala- Ngwa North, Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria.[2]

Career

After extensive studies abroad, Abengowe returned to Nigeria. He was admitted to practice medicine in 1956 as shown in the official Nigerian Government Gazette[3] on page 425, Notice no 684. For continuous education and development, he underwent Clinical Attachment at the Royal Hospital for sick children, Bristol, England (1961–1962) and Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, John Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK (1963–1965). Abengowe was also a Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at the Government General Hospital, Port-Harcourt, Nigeria (1965–1966) and a lecturer at the University of Newfoundland, St John (1973–1974). He also lectured at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1978–2023), and was a visiting lecturer at the Department of Cardiology, St. Thomas Hospital, London (1976–1979). He became a full Professor of Medicine and Clinical Cardiology in 1985 at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.[4][5]

Death

Abengowe passed away in 2023.[6][7]
