Christiane Wolf [pronounced "kri-stii-aa-ne"] is a German-American author, speaker and teacher of mindfulness, compassion and stress reduction. With her medical background, Wolf is known for her specialty in working with people who suffer from chronic illness and pain.[1] Wolf is an authorized Buddhist teacher in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition and teaches classes and retreats worldwide.[2]

Career

Wolf was trained as a physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Germany before moving to Los Angeles in 2003, where she studied Zen Buddhism and Insight meditation with Trudy Goodman.[3] She was additionally trained and mentored by Jack Kornfield, and Gil Fronsdal, as well as in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) with Jon Kabat-Zinn. [4] After helping to co-found InsightLA with Goodman, she trained to become a Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher.[5]

Wolf is the lead consultant and co-founder of VA CALM, a national mindfulness facilitator training for the US Department of Veterans Affairs' Whole Health Program,[6] which has trained over 800 clinicians who work with veterans, in MBSR. Wolf completed a Dharma/Retreat teacher training through Spirit Rock Meditation Center and Insight Meditation Society (IMS) under Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein.[3] Wolf teaches and leads retreats on mindfulness in the US and Europe, in both English and German.[7]

Mindfulness

Wolf has written extensively about mindfulness and chronic pain in her book, Outsmart Your Pain,[8] which has a foreword by Daniel J. Siegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA.[9][10]The Buddhist concept of compassionate acceptance is also explored in the book.[11] Wolf also co-authored A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness, with Dr. J. Greg Serpa, a colleague at the VA. Wolf has authored many articles about incorporating mindfulness into daily life.[12][13][14]She has appeared on journalist Dan Harris’ podcast Ten Percent Happier,[2] and was featured on Sharon Salzburg's podcast ep.175 of the Metta Hour.[15]

Personal life

Wolf is married and has three children. She is an avid runner and ultra-marathoner.[16]
