Crispin Dube (October 1966 – 19 October 2022) was a Zimbabwean accountant, political activist, and politician. He is most known for the role he played in office as a Councillor in Mutare, Zimbabwe. He served as councillor for ward 9 in Dangamvura for the opposition parties Movement for Democratic Change – Tsavangirai and later Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). He was one of the CCC councillors who was re-elected after mass recalls by MDC-T leader, Douglas Mwonzora in 2022.[1]
Prior to joining public office he worked as an accountant for Mutare City Council.
He gained popularity in Mutare for advocating for community projects that were non-political. His projects in office included ensuring the availability of short-term jobs, portable water, trash collection, road repairs and keeping the environment clean within the ward over the several years he served as Councilor.[2][3][4] He advocated for accountability for the violence faced during the 2008 Zimbabwean national elections where MDC supporters were killed.[5]
Assault and abduction[edit]
He was assaulted in 2013 by Giles Mutsekwa and his accomplices Kingston Mutandi, Lovemore Tatenda Nhambarare, and Raphael Mutandi because the perpetrators alleged that Dube was trying to sabotage his efforts to run on behalf of MDC for the ward 9 constituency during the elections.
He was abducted, imprisoned and tortured in 2019 by the Zimbabwean police.[4]
Personal[edit]
He died on Oct 19, 2022 at Victoria Chitepo Hospital in Mutare after illness due to complications resulting from his time in jail. He was the son of National Constitutional Assembly politician Bernard Dube.[6][7]
