Cui Daoyi

Cui Daoyi (Chinese: 崔道怡, November 23, 1934—July 17, 2022), male, originally from Faku, Liaoning Province, was born in Tieling, Liaoning Province. He is a literary editor, writer and literary critic in China, former executive deputy editor of People's Literature magazine, editor, and honorary member of Chinese Writers Association.[1][2][3]

Life and career[edit]

Born in Tieling City, Liaoning Province on November 23, 1934, he moved to Beiping with his family at the age of 5.[4]In 1953, the first children's novel The First Reader was published in Youth Literature and Art.[5]。Graduated from the Chinese Department of Peking University in the summer of 1956.[6]He entered People's Literature magazine and worked as an editor, head of novel group, deputy director, deputy editor-in-chief and executive deputy editor-in-chief.Participated in Chinese Communist Party in 1984.In October 1987, the professional title was evaluated as editor.In 1988, he won the excellent editor award of national literary periodicals.In 1992, he received special government allowance.In 1996, he was awarded the title of National Top 100 Publishers by the General Administration of Publishing.Retired in the winter of 1998.In 2006, he won the third Laoshe Prose Award.[7]In 2020, he was awarded the "Tribute to Senior Literary Editor Award" by China Writers Publishing Group and the National Federation of Literary Newspapers.[8]He died in Beijing at 14: 10 on July 17th, 2022.[9]In 2020, he was awarded "Tribute to Senior Literary Editor Award" by China Writers Publishing Group and the National Federation of Literary Newspapers.He died in Beijing at 14: 10 on July 17, 2022.

Mr. Cui Daoyi has been engaged in literary editing for a long time, with a firm political stance and outstanding achievements. He has found and recommended many new literary talents and edited a large number of excellent masterpieces. Mr. Cui Daoyi is a benchmark and model of editing industry. During his nearly forty years of editing career, Mr. Cui Daoyi has discovered and trained a large number of writers such as Wang Zengqi, Li Guowen, Jiang Zilong and Liu Xinwu, and edited a large number of excellent works such as The Other Side of the Mountain, The Head Teacher and Anecdotes on the Western Front. He is known as "the literary ferryman", "the national editor", "the first editor in the world" and "the chief novel editor". Mr. Cui Daoyi tried his best to fulfill his duties in his post, and ensured the pure character and high-quality operation of the publication with his broad literary vision, accurate artistic judgment, surging work passion and strict political control. He also served as the director of the editorial board of the "Star of Literature Series in the 21st Century", and made great contributions to the growth of new literary people from generation to generation.[10]

Major achievements[edit]

He discovered and trained a large number of writers, such as Wang Zengqi, Li Guowen, Jiang Zilong and Liu Xinwu, and edited a large number of excellent works, such as The Family Beyond the Mountain, The Head Teacher and Anecdotes on the Western Front. Since 1979, he has edited the China New Literature Series, selected short stories in the 30 years and 50 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China and other outstanding works. In 1985, at the invitation of Baihua Publishing House, he edited a remarkable collection of short stories, The Novel Picking the Pearl, which won awards during the five years from 1979 to 1983. Since 1983, he has served as the judge of the National Excellent Novel Award, the National Excellent Children's Literature Award and the Lu Xun Literature Award sponsored by the Chinese Writers Association, the "Five One Project" Award sponsored by the Central Propaganda Department, the judge of the government periodical award sponsored by the State Publishing Administration, and the honorary member of the National Committee of the Chinese Writers Association. Director of the Editorial Committee of "21st Century Literature Star Series" sponsored by China Literature Foundation.

Honor[edit]

In 1988, he won the excellent editor award of national literary periodicals. In 1992, he received special government allowance. In 1996, he was awarded the National Top 100 Publishers Certificate by the General Administration of Publishing. In 2020, he was awarded "Tribute to Senior Literary Editor Award" by China Writers Publishing Group and the National Federation of Literary Newspapers.

He is the author of children's literature The Road of Players, short story About the Use of an Egg, novella Unnamed Autumn Rain, monograph Talk about Creative Skills, Introduction to Novel Creation, Twelve Lectures on Novel Creation, Water is Clouding and Square Apple.
