Part of the DB E.C.O. Group

DB International Operations (DB IO) is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, founded in 2017 in Germany. It operates globally as part of the DB E.C.O. Group. DB IO specializes in the operation and maintenance of rail infrastructure and vehicles for passenger and freight transportation systems outside Europe.

History[edit]

DB International Operations was founded in 2017 in Germany as a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn and a part of DB E.C.O. Group.[1]

In July 2022, DB IO secured a 12-year contract (with a 5-year extension option) from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to manage the operation and maintenance of India's first regional rapid transit system (RRTS), covering 82 kilometers.[2][3][4][5]

DB IO won a contract in April 2022 to plan, operate, and maintain rail passenger transport in the Toronto metropolitan region, comprising a 450-kilometer network. This project, named GO Rail Expansion – On-Corridor Works, is one of Deutsche Bahn's largest, with significant modernization and expansion plans. The client for this project is Metrolinx, a crown agency of the Government of Ontario that manages and integrates road and public transport in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.[6][7]

The company was contracted to operate a freight line in Uruguay as part of a government investment program, serving a new pulp mill. This 25-year contract involves operations, design, and maintenance of specialized freight wagons and locomotives.[8]

In November 2022, DB IO, along with Egyptian company Elsewedy Electric, secured a contract to operate Egypt's first high-speed rail network. The 15-year contract encompasses 2,000 route kilometers, making it one of Egypt's largest rail projects.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Activities[edit]

DB International Operations operates and maintains passenger rail transport and rail freight services (including rolling stock and rail infrastructure) outside Europe. Its core business is the maintenance and operation of existing (brownfield) and to-be-built (greenfield) railway networks. DB IO runs projects in Canada, India and Uruguay.[16]

DB International Operations offers private and governmental customers outside of Europe operations and maintenance from a single source. It initiates and oversees projects for the operation and maintenance of rail-related undertakings. This work is organized around project-specific, individual local subsidiaries in different countries, such as India, Canada, Uruguay and Egypt.[9][17][15][2]

The company has its headquarters in Berlin, Germany, with over 80 employees in 2023. DB IO's operating companies have offices in Delhi, India; Toronto, Canada; and Montevideo, Uruguay.
