Dimming the lights on Broadway
The dimming of the marquee lights of Broadway theaters in New York City is an act done to honor the death of a significant person in the theatre world. The first person to be honored in this manner was Gertrude Lawrence, who was starring in The King and I at the time of her death in 1952.[1][2]
