From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Đoko Miljanić also known as Djoko Banjanin (Serbian Cyrillic: Ђоко Миљанић; Miljanići, Banjani, 1820 - Duga, Nikšić, 1862) was a serdar and one of the greatest heroes of his time in Montenegro, the son of the famous knez Rado Božov.

Đoko Miljanić is also known by the name Đoko or Djoko Banjanin. He distinguished himself very early, leading continuous and bloody battles with the Turks, side by side with the most famous commanders, such as Serdar Šćepan Radojev, Pop Luka Jovović, Duke Ilija Đukanov-Zvicer and others, not at all inferior to them in courage and daring. He also distinguished himself in the Montenegrin-Ottoman War of 1852-1853, and the defense of Grahovo in the same year, in the expulsion of the Turks from Banjani in 1857 and the demolition of the watchtower on Velimlje in the Battle of Grahovac in 1858 and many other battles.

He died in 1862 in Duga, during Omer Pasha's campaign in Montenegro. He is sung in many folk songs, including "Hero's Monument of Duke Mirko Petrović" and "Prince Nikola's Carriage".
