The 2021 People's National Congress leadership election was held on December 19, 2021 to elect the new leader of the People's National Congress Reform (PNCR), the largest faction of the APNU alliance. The election was held at the party's biennial congress, alongside elections for Chairman, Vice-Chair and Treasurer.
Incumbent leader and former President of Guyana David Granger chose to not stand for re-election. Stalwart of the party, Aubrey Norton was elected leader in a landslide, defeating both former government minister and Leader of the Opposition Joseph Harmon and former civil servant Richard Vanwest Charles.
Date[edit]
This election was part of the PNCR's 21st Biennial Congress, originally scheduled for 2020. In October 2020, PNCR General Secretary Amna Ally announced a postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] By March 2021, the Congress had still not been rescheduled.[2] In September, the party's Central Executive Committee (CEC) voted to hold the Congress by 13 December 2021.[3] Nomination Day was held on 12 November, with the Congress scheduled for 11 December.[4]
On 3 December, a CEC member requested the PNCR Chief Elections Officer Vincent Alexander to report on the party's readiness for the Congress.[5] On 9 December, the CEC announced that the Congress would be postponed to 18 December in light of the report's findings.[6]
