On April 29, 2022, a destructive EF3 tornado tracked through portions of Andover, Kansas, causing extensive damage across parts of Andover and Midway, Kansas in Butler County, and across southeastern Sedgwick County.[2]
Meteorological synopsis
[edit]On April 29, a level 3/enhanced risk of severe weather was issued for portions of eastern Kansas, northern Oklahoma, southeastern Nebraska, southwestern Iowa, and extreme western Missouri by the Storm Prediction Center, with a more significant level 4/moderate risk introduced across northeastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska. A significant, 10 percent tornado risk was also highlighted across portions of the enhanced and moderate risks.[3] Later that day, a strong low-pressure area tracked across Kansas, along with a dryline that moved along the Interstate 135 corridor.[4]
Tornado summary
[edit]The tornado first touched down east of the McConnell Air Force Base.[1] A YMCA in Andover was also hit.[5][6]
Over 200 homes were damaged or destroyed in Sedgwick County.[7]
Aftermath
[edit]Following the tornado, a $900,000 donation was made to United Way to help with recovery efforts, and the city of Andover donated more than $255,000 to 73 impacted families.[8] Over 150 people from McConnell Air Force Base volunteered to help with recovery efforts.[9]
On April 29, 2023, one year after the tornado, an anniversary event occurred at a park in Andover.[8]
