Thomas Egeler, also known as 4000, (born October 1, 1963 in Heilbronn) is a contemporary painter. He lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin.
Life[edit]
4000 grew up near Heilbronn and completed his school education in 1983 with the Abitur at the local Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium. From 1985 to 1988, he completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist. After completing his training, he lived briefly in Bremen, then in Hamburg and Berlin.
He began his artistic career in the 1990s in his studio in Hamburg St. Pauli. He first became known for his work in producer galleries, alternative clubs and event spaces in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt and has always kept his distance from the market and its marketing tools. Meanwhile, the works are represented in recognized galleries and fairs, as well as in the possession of prominent art collectors.
Work[edit]
4000 often divides his series into categories. This is how the series "Berlin" and "Hamburg" were created, with raw, fast-paced depictions of urban scenes and buildings like the Berlin TV Tower or the Spiegel-building in Hamburg. A part of his city paintings have the neighborhood of St. Pauli as their theme, for example the Reeperbahn. In addition, there is the series "Richter to go" - following the works of the German painter Gerhard Richter. Also popular are the "Beck's" series with diverse depictions of the eponymous beer can. Besides this, some ironic series have been created, such as the "Potato Family" or "The Five Mark Piece."
He also designed film sets, illustrations and numerous book covers, such as for the books "Glitterschnitter" (2021) and "Wiener Straße" (2017) by Sven Regener.[1] For the Berlin publisher Pulpmaster (Erich Maas/ Frank Nowatzki), 4000 has realized over 40 covers since 1993, including for books by the writers Jim Nisbet, Thor Kunkel, Garry Disher, Tom Franklin and Megan Abbott.[2]
In 2016, an extensive anniversary exhibition "25 years of 4000" took place, featuring numerous works by the artist as well as contributions from companions and colleagues, among them Jim Avignon, Till Gerhard, Stefan Marx, Heiko Müller and Dennis Scholl.[3] The exhibition for the follow-up anniversary "30 years 4000" in April 2021 took place exclusively as an online gallery due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]
