5th High School of Heraklion (Greek: 5ο Γενικό Λύκειο Ηρακλείου) is a public co-educational high school located in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

History

[edit]

Today's school is an evolution of the 3rd High School for Girls, which, from 1972 to 1979, was housed in a building at Dimokratias Street. In the school year 1979 – 1980 it was converted into a mixed high school, renamed 5th and transferred to the Kapetanakeio school complex. It operated as the 5th General High School of Heraklion until 1997. As a Unified High School it is still housed in the Kapetanakeio building, alternating the morning and afternoon shifts with the 1st Unified High School of Heraklion. In October 1999, it was relocated to the SEK Laboratories in the area of Patela.

At the beginning of 2004 it is transferred to its own building. In 2006, it was again transformed into the 5th General High School.

Identity

[edit]

The school is considered one of the most prestigious high schools in Heraklion, after the 3rd High School, against whom there is a strong rivalry due to the 5th's back-to-back defeats in basketball.
