ANYiSO[1] is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) that promotes human dignity, women empowerment, gender equity, literacy amongst refugees and immigrants helping through free English classes, skill acquisition classes, various trainings and workshops.
It was founded as a voluntary organisation in 2014 and in 2016, it became a registered charity[2] [3]in Scotland, United Kingdom[4]
ANYiSO is a word coined from the Igbo language which means ‘’we belong’’.
How it all started[edit]
ANYiSO started by being a support group to women and the issues that beguile them spread its tentacles to helping and supporting with female refugees and asylum seekers.[5]
Activities[edit]
The activities of the NGO include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)[6] classes, social justice, accessibility to health services for children, rehabilitation after domestic violence, mental health care service. Through provision of aids and advocacy, migrants get visas to study/work or they are sponsored to return to their home countries.[7]
Impact[edit]
The NGO partners with other national and international organizations such as British Red cross, Scottish Refugee Council, Amnesty International, Migrant Voice UK, YWCA, Young Women’s Movement etc to represent and work with blacks and people of colour (BPoC) that is ethnic minorities from more than 83 different nationalities around the world.
The people they work with are majorly from the non-English speaking countries, can barely communicate in English, have little or no skills and are not empowered digitally. As a result of this, they are disenfranchised from the system because they do not have access to jobs or childcare support
Through ESOL classes, trainings and workshops and skill acquisition classes, they improve their English, learn new skills, and integrate into the society. Also, through advocacy, some eventually settle in through visas or are granted asylum. The rest are sponsored to return to their home countries.
ANYiSO provides both physical and digital support, rehabilitation after domestic violence, mental health care services and access to childcare support.
