A Sad Love Story (Mandarin: 桃花泣血記) is a 1932 movie promotional song and Taiwanese pop song written by Jhan Tian-ma (詹天馬) and Wang Yun-fong (王雲峰), originally sung by Sun-sun, which was so well received that it became a major hit in opening up the record market for the song.[1]

After 1931, the silent film "A Sad Love Story,"[2] produced by the film distributor Shanghai United Photoplay Service, was premiered in Taiwan's busiest theater at the time in Dadaocheng . In order to enhance publicity and attract audiences to watch the film, the film industry commissioned the famous debaters of the Dadaocheng area in Taipei, Jhan Tian-ma (詹天馬) and Wang Yun-fong (王雲峰), to create lyrics for the soundtrack based on the script of the film's promotional flyer; Jhan Tian-ma used the traditional technique of Taiwan's folk couplets to create seven-character couplets for each line. Jhan Tian-ma and Wang Yun-fong, famous debaters (movie narrators) in Taipei's Dadaocheng district at the time, were commissioned to create lyrics based on the movie's flyer as well as a soundtrack to promote the movie. Jhan Tian-ma utilized the traditional technique of the Taiwanese folk couplet of four lines to create narrative lyrics, and then commissioned the composer Wang Yun-fong to write the music for them, and the movie's theme promotional song, "A Sad Love Story," [3]was then completed. Upon completion of the lyrics, the studio hired a small band to play the song along the streets of Yongle Town and Taiping Town to attract the public to watch the film in theaters. As the movie became more and more popular, the song became famous all over the world and was recorded and released by Columbia Records.[1][4]
Publicity Parade[edit]
After that, the film industry carefully trained a few young girls to organize a publicity team, and every day in the busy areas of Taipei, the girls were dressed up as the main characters in the show, accompanied by an orchestra, and sang "A Sad Love Story" loudly in the streets and alleys. The innovative publicity technique created a sensation throughout Taiwan and led to the popularity of Taiwanese pop songs. "A Sad Love Story" quickly became popular everywhere, and both the movie and the song became extremely popular.[5][6][7]

Columbia's director, the Japanese Shojiro Bakuno, invited Sadayoshi Okuyama to arrange the music, and hired the paparazzi singer Sun-sun to sing the lead vocals, recording and releasing the record, and "A Sad Love Story" became the first Taiwanese pop song in history. In the 1930s, a gramophone 78 rpm cassette tape could only record a maximum of 3 minutes and 30 seconds on a single side. The movie "A Sad Love Story" was a 1 hour 28 minute black and white silent film, and the theme song was over 5 minutes 30 seconds long. Due to the technical limitations of recording, the song "A Sad Love Story" had to be recorded as two separate tracks, one for the top and the other for the bottom of the movie.[3]
Singing[edit]
The song is in the form of a seven-character tune, so that it can be sung with variations to suit the mood of the play.[1][8]The original lyrics are 280 words long, with ten stanzas of the same melody. On the stage, it is common to extract only some of the lyrics to fit the limited performance time.[3]
