Action for Child Trauma International (ACTI) is a charity registered in the UK that provides training and support to communities responding to psychological trauma in children.[3]
The charity has an international focus and has trained people in eighteen countries.[4] The charity specialises in teaching Children's Accelerated Trauma Technique and provides related training in anxiety and psychological resilience, children's rights, child development, safeguarding and how to work effectively with children who may be hard to engage in therapeutic work.[5]

The organisation was formed in December 2008 under the name Luna Children's Charity by Dr. Carlotta Raby[6] and registered as a charitable incorporated organisation in 2017.[7]
The organisation was established by Dr. Raby after work with communities affected by violence during the Rwandan genocide. The purpose was to enable local organisations supporting survivors of trauma and conflict to access free training in Children's Accelerated Trauma Treatment (CATT) and establish culturally appropriate and locally owned sustainable methods for ongoing CATT training in their communities.[8]
Children's Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT)[edit]
Children's Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT) is an holistic approach that was developed for specifically for children and adolescents. It combines cognitive behavioural therapy techniques, play therapy, art therapy and children's rights principles. It is compliant with both UK NICE guidance and World Health Organisation (WHO)[9] guidance on treating children with PTSD and Complex PTSD.[10]
Deploying CATT in response to war, conflict, disaster and state failure[edit]
CATT can be taught outside the UK to people without clinical backgrounds, allowing it to be deployed into contexts where clinical services are underdeveloped or significantly disrupted by war, conflict, disaster and state failure.[11]
CATT practitioners trained by ACTI established a clinic in 2019 Gaza with IMET2000 and Firefly International.[12] The clinic demonstrated that CATT significantly reduced trauma symptom severity in children and young people experiencing cumulative and ongoing stressors from conflict, violence and associated socio-economic instability, including those with chronic symptoms.[13] The BBC reported that the clinic's work was suspended due to the displacement of staff caused by the 2023 Israel-Hamas war.[14]
CATT practitioners trained by ACTI provide support to refugee children on the border between Uganda and Sudan.[15] These practitioners are former refugees with lived experience of trauma who live in the communities they serve.[16]
ACTI's application of children's rights when establishing therapeutic context through the CATT protocol has been studied in Armenia[17] and Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.[18]
