Professor Osuntogun Caleb Adeniyi (born April 14, 1943) is a renowned Nigerian Agricultural Economist, known for his extensive work in agricultural development, environmental sustainability, and cooperative studies. He has held significant academic and leadership positions and has been recognized for his contributions to both national and international agricultural economics.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Osuntogun was born in Nigeria. He attended Olu-Iwa College, Ijebu-Ode, and Muslim College, Ijebu-Ode, before obtaining a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1967. He furthered his education at the University of Leeds, U.K., where he earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 1971.

Professional Career[edit]

Osuntogun began his career as a teacher at Christ Apostolic Grammar School, Iperu Remo, and later worked as a manager-in-training at United Bank for Africa Limited. He served as a research officer at the Central Bank of Nigeria before moving into academia. At Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, he progressed from lecturer to senior lecturer, and eventually to professor of Agricultural Economics. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the university from 1990 to 1991.

He has held significant leadership roles, including Director/Chief Executive of the Foundation for Environmental Development and Education in Nigeria (FEDEN) and Regional Programme Director for the Leadership for Environment and Development Programme (LEAD) for Anglophone West Africa. He has been the Chairman of the Governing Board of LEAD Anglophone West Africa since 2019. Since 2004, he has been the Founder/Chairman of the Resource Integrated Development Foundation (RIDF).

Professor Osuntogun has served on various boards and committees, including the Nigerian Agricultural and Cooperative Bank, National Advisory Council for Cooperative Development, and the Nigeria Internet Group. He has been an adviser to the Federal Ministry of Co-operatives and Supply and a member of multiple national and international delegations on climate change. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Internet Group since 2000, and the National Committee on Climate Change since 2003. He has served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, Nigeria since January 2017.

International Activities[edit]

He has been actively involved in international organizations, serving as a member of the Governing Board of the West African Science Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) and as an elected Vice Chairman of the Governing Board. He has also been a resource person at numerous international conferences and training sessions. He has played a significant role in the design of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as a member of party/official delegate and negotiator on climate change finance at the COP on Climate Change.
