In 1949, during the Greek civil war, Greek royalist forces had surrounded the Greek communist rebels around the area of Mt. Gramos. The rebels were receiving supplies and aid from the Albanian communist government of the time, and in order to put a stop to this, the Greek army tried to penetrate into Albania and cut off the supply route to Gramos. Fighting went on for almost a month, with hundred of casualties on both sides. The Albanian forces deployed in the region had a strength of approx. 10,000 men and were comprised of the VIII Div. (Korca), one infantry Brigade from Vlora (Valona) and one infantry regiment from Tirana. The Albanian forces defeated the invading Greek royalists and forced the Greeks to withdraw from the border.
