Draft:Amir Hamza (Pakistan Army officer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brigadier Amir Hamza was a retired Pakistan Army officer who served as the Director General of the Punjab Emergency Services Academy after his retirement from Pakistan Army. According to Indian sources, Hamza, was a key Inter-Services Intelligence operative and mastermind behind the 2018 Sunjuwan attack. He was assassinated by unknown gunmen in 2024.

Biography[edit]

Following his retirement from Pakistan Army in 2016, Hamza was appointed as the Director General of the Punjab Emergency Services Academy in January 2016,.[1] He quit from this position in January 2017.[2] Afterwards, he was employed at DHA Lahore, where he served until 2021.[3]

He hailed from Bhera, Sargodha District and was traveling to Chakwal on 18 June 2024 with his wife and daughter to celebrate Eid al-Adha[4] when, he was assassinated by four unknown gunmen near Lillah Interchange in the Jhelum District.[5][6]

According to Indian counter-terror agencies, Hamza was a key Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) operative and one of the key masterminds behind the 2018 Sunjuwan attack. He was also allegedly involved in other operations against India and was the second Pakistani linked to the Sunjuwan attack to be killed. The first was Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Khawaja Shahid.[7][8] In a statement to the police, Hamza's spouse insisted that Hamza had no personal enmity with anyone. The police also called the murder as a "targeted killing".[9] However, a source in Pakistani security forces rejected India's claims, calling them "false propaganda" and said Hamza had "never served in any Intelligence set up.".[3][1]
