Andrés Di Tella (1958) is a filmmaker, writer and curator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has directed fourteen feature-length films: Montoneros, una historia (1995), Macedonio Fernández (1995), Prohibido (1997), La televisión y yo (2002), Fotografías (2007), El país del Diablo (2008), Hachazos (2011), ¡Volveremos a las montañas! (2012), Máquina de sueños (2013), El ojo en el cielo (2013), 327 cuadernos (2015), Ficción privada (2019), Diarios (2022) and Mixtape La Pampa (2023).

Retrospectives of his films have been held at the Cineteca Nacional de México, the E Tudo Verdade festival at São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia; Festival dei Popoli, Florence; Festival de Lima; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Tabakalera (San Sebastián); Filmoteca de Catalunya (Barcelona); Filmoteca Española (Madrid); Casa de América (Madrid), Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Cine Universidad Católica (Santiago, Chile); among other places. His work spans video art, installations and performance pieces, as well as TV documentaries. His installations have been exhibited at Espacio Fundación Telefónica and Centro Cultural Kirchner in Buenos Aires and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Tabakalera in San Sebastián, Spain.

He has published two books of non-fiction: Hachazos (Caja Negra, Buenos Aires, 2011) and Cuadernos (Entropía, Buenos Aires, 2021 / Caballo de Troya, Madrid, 2021). His essays have appeared in El guión cinematográfico (Universidad del Litoral, Santa Fe 1990); Historia de la vida privada en la Argentina (Tusquets, Buenos Aires, 2001); Ersatzökonomien und städtische Bewegungen in Rio de Janeiro und Buenos Aires (MetroZones Books, Berlin 2005); O cinema do real (Cosac Naify, Sao Paulo, 2005); Después de lo real (Archivos de la Filmoteca, Valencia, 2008); Telling Ruins in Latin America (Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2009); Cine encontrado: qué es y adónde va el found footage (Ediciones BAFICI, Buenos Aires, 2010); The Cinema of Me. The Self and Subjectivity in First Person Documentary (Wallflower Press, London, 2012); Directory of World Cinema: Argentina (Intellect Books, Chicago, 2014); A verdade de cada um (Cosac Naify, Sao Paulo, 2015); Historias extraordinarias. Cinema argentino contemporáneo (Caixa Cultural Curitiba, 2018).

Cine Documental en América Latina (Cátedra, Madrid 2003), a reference book edited by Paulo Antonio Paranaguá, devotes a chapter to his work, placing him among the most significant filmmakers in the history of documentary in Latin America. Two books have been published about his work: Andrés Di Tella: cine documental y archivo personal, edited by Paul Firbas and Pedro Meira Monteiro (Siglo XXI, Buenos Aires, 2006) and Inventario de regresos: el cine documental de Andrés Di Tella, edited by Casimiro Torreiro (Cines del Sur, Granada, 2011). El documental y yo: il cinema di Andrés Di Tella, an extended essay and dossier by Daniele Dottorini, was published as a catalog for the Festival dei Popoli (Florenece, 2012).

He was the recipient of the Premio Konex de Platino (Argentina) for Best Documentary Filmmaker of the decade 2011-2020, and also the Guggenheim Fellowship. He has sat on panels for the Rockefeller Foundation (USA), Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (Chile), Premio Nacional del Ministerio de Cultura (Colombia), Instituto de Cine Uruguayo, Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (Argentina) and Fondo Nacional de las Artes (Argentina) and several film festival juries including BAFICI and Mar del Plata Film Festival (Argentina), Festival de San Sebastián, Festival de Málaga, Documenta Madrid (Spain), Festival de Lima (Perú), E tudo verdade (Brazil), Festival Curta 8 (Brazil) and others. In 2023, he was the first Argentine documentary filmmaker to be invited to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As curator, he notably founded the Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (BAFICI), considered by many the principal film event in Latin America, which he directed in its first editions (1999-2001). From 2002 to 2011, he was the Artistic Director of the Princeton Documentary Festival, at Princeton University.

He is currently teaching at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires, where he is Director of the Film Program, which has included films, seminars and presentations by leading filmmakers such as Lucrecia Martel, Pedro Costa, Joao Moreira Salles, James Benning, Catherine Grant, Michael Temple, Chloé Galibert-Lainé, Nele Wohlatz, Alejo Moguillansky, Joao Pedro Rodrigues, Jonás Trueba, Radu Jude, Jonathan Perel, Ana Katz and others.

He has taught as Visiting Professor at Harvard University and Princeton University and has carried out short seminars and workshops at Stony Brook University, University of California at Davis, Universidad Católica (Santiago, Chile), Universidad de Chile (Santiago), Universidad de San Andrés (Buenos Aires), Birkbeck - University of London, University of Oxford, The New School (New York), Harvard University and Princeton University. He has carried out documentary film workshops in professional contexts in Brazil (Doc Sao Paulo), Spain (Casa de América, Universidad de Navarra, Universidad Pompeu Fabra), Uruguay (Doc Montevideo), Colombia (Taller de Desarrollo de Proyectos Documentales, Pro-Imágenes, Festival Internacioal de Cine de Cali) Chile (Antofadocs) and Argentina (Centro Cultural Rojas - Universidad de Buenos Aires, BAFICI). From 2002 to 2010 he was academic director of the Latin American Film Projects Workshop organized first by Fundación Antorchas and then by Fundación TYPA.
