Andrew Watson (born 23 August, 1964) is a British educator, artist and sustainability advocate. He has worked extensively with the International Baccalaureate and the United World College movements and was one of the founding board members of Albanian College[1][2][3]. He is a co-Director of Sustainability Education with Richard Calland[4].

Biography[edit]

Early life and education[edit]

Andrew Watson was born in London[5] on the 23rd of August 1964. He is the second child of four boys[6]. He attended first Dulwich College and then Alleyn's School[7], from which he graduated in 1982. He then went on to study at Chelsea College of Arts[8] and the University of Liverpool before completing his undergraduate degree with the Open University. He holds a PGCE from the University of Cambridge (Homerton College), where he was awarded a Blue (football), and a Master's in International Education Management from Oxford Brookes University[7].

Career[edit]

Watson's career began as an artist, exhibiting in London[6]. In 1997 he began working in international education full time, taking up positions in Jerusalem, Ban Chang, Milan, Geneva, Phuket, Florence and Amsterdam[9]. In addition to teaching and leadership positions, he has also worked substantially with the IB as a workshop leader, programme field representative and workshop author[10][11]. He has worked with UWC both as a teacher and as a member of the board for UWC Mostar[12][11][13].

He has been High School Principal of both the International School of Florence[14] and the International School of Amsterdam[15][16], as well as Director of the Jerusalem American School[5].

He has previously (early 2000s) examined aspects of Thai and South East Asian culture, both as a columnist for the Pattaya Mail and as a presenter on Pattaya Mail TV with his show Beyond the Beach[17].

Sustainability and equity[edit]

Andrew Watson works extensively with international schools, organisations and change agents to facilitate the effective changes necessary to tackle the climate crisis, primarily through the organisation SusEd (Sustainability Education), and has contributed to international school literature on this topic[18][19]

Along with his eldest daughter, Shamayim, Watson was a contributing author to Enacting Equitable Global Citizenship Education in Schools: Lessons from Dialogue between Research and Practice (2023)[20][21]. He has also written for International Schools Magazine[12] and The National Society (Church of England and Church in Wales) for the Promotion of Education[22].
