Critical Reception[edit]

Anxious Arms' album "Crimes of Despair" received critical acclaim for its blend of genres and emotional depth. A review from Moderate Rock noted the band's transition from punk roots to a more intense and raw sound, stating, "While they have added increasing amounts of distortion to their sound since their inception, here everything is absolutely smothered in feedback, grit, and rage."[1] The review particularly highlighted the transformation of the title track into something "dark, hypnotic, and immersive."

Further analysis from Idioteq praised the band's evolution and sonic diversity. "You can still hear bits of early ANXIOUS ARMS throughout their new record, but sonically, there are many more layers and dynamics happening," the review stated. It pointed out the influence of Black Sabbath and Sleep in the introductory track and commended the heavy bass and vocal intensity in the title track. The review also praised the album for its ability to "switch tempo at perfect points," especially in tracks like 'Foundation,' which adds to the album's driving and urgent feel.[2]

"Crimes of Despair" marks a significant evolution from the band's early emo beginnings to a more complex blend of metal and hardcore influences. The lyrical themes, as noted by Idioteq, are particularly strong in this album, with vocalist Kyle Bolla exploring emotions of loneliness, anger, and doubt in a doom-like world. The consistent despair theme, paired with the album's slow, heavy doom metal to post-hardcore dynamic, was highlighted as a key strength. The Idioteq review concluded that Anxious Arms had crafted a concise and consistent LP, seamlessly incorporating influences ranging from Crowbar to Deftones and Cave In.
