Arctic Dreams is a Serbian-German sympho-industrial-black-death-metal band originally founded in 2009 year in St. Petersburg, Russia by Alexander Alex_Y Järvinen (vocal/guitars/music/lyric) and Igor Sydius Pokatilov (back-vocal/guitar) and based in Belgrade, Serbia..[1] The name of the group is imbued with the spirit of Scandinavia, such traditional phenomena as the northern winter, the cold and the polar night.[2] The theme of the compositions is very different, ranging from some abstract things and ending with the subjects of books, movies and games.[3] For a long time the project was a studio project, but since 2020 it has resumed its activities. Then in 2022 former members of the band were forced to relocate from Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine[4]

History

[edit]

The project started in 2009 when Alex_Y moved to St. Petersburg and met guitarist Igor Sydius. They find bass player Max Borin and drummer Nikita Orlov. The group starts rehearsals and in January 2010 records a debut demo which is stylistically completely different from the current material. In the same year, Alex_Y leaves for Finland where he starts composing material for his debut album, which will be released 12 years later. A year later, returning to Russia, he continues the process of composing for the album until 2014.[5] In 2014, the band finally started recording their debut album. The rhythm section was recorded quickly,[6] but after that, a long process of searching for the band's sound began, which led to Alex_ Y founding his own studio and label. Work on the album continues until 2022, almost eight years and after so many years of silence, the team does four releases in one year. In the same year, the group leaves Russia due to the war, Igor moves to Berlin, and Alex_Y to Belgrade where the group is now based and will continue its activities.

Style

[edit]

The band's musical style has its origins in symphonic black metal, although the first demos came out in the style of gothic-industrial metal inspired by such bands as Deathstars and Dope Stars Inc.. For eight years of painstaking work in the studio, the style has transformed into something unique, including a variety of styles of metal, into what the project members themselves call 'arctic dreams metal'. In the musical material, the influence of completely different performers is felt, ranging from classical composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and ending with representatives of cyber-gothic and dark electro Hocico, Diary of Dreams, Die Sektor, and Nurzery. It was not without the influence of a wide variety of styles: gothic metal Type O Negative, Tiamat, Atrocity, death-metal Death, Cynic, melodic-death-metal In flames, Dark Tranquility, At The Gates industrial metal Rammstein, Pain, heavy metal Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, thrash metal Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Kreator, norwegian black-metal Burzum, Mayhem, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Immortal, symphonic black metal Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, power-metal Startovarius, Sonata Arctica, doom metal Therion, Crematory, and many others.

It just so happens that we started working on it in 2014. We quickly figured out the rhythm section and then started the long journey of finding our own sound and concept, which took us 6 years, in the end we came back to it fully only in 2020. This time was needed to finally form the material which was finally released.
