Artur Volodymyrovych Hrytsenko also written as Artur Gritsenko (Ukrainian: Артур Володимирович Гриценко; 15 February 1979 – 22 April 2022) was a professional Ukrainian football player who mainly played as a defender but also as a midfielder. He played among others for FC Lviv and FC Karpaty Lviv in the Ukrainian Premier League.[2]

Hrytsenko died during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, in the Battle of Kharkiv.[1]

Biography[edit]

Hrytsenko started with football at Zhytomyr where his coach was Anatoliy Tetyanevych, and at Lviv, being coached by Yaroslav Lutsyshyn. He graduated at the football department of what is now called the Lviv State School of Physical Culture.[4]

At professional level he made his debut when he was seventeen years old playing for FC Lviv (1992) in the away game against FC Dnipro Cherkasy during the 1996–97 Ukrainian First League on 10 October 1996. He played for Lviv until the team was merged with FC Karpaty-2 Lviv in 2001. From then he was under contract for FC Karpaty Lviv; playing for FC Karpaty-2 Lviv in the Ukrainian First League and for FC Karpaty-3 Lviv in the Ukrainian Second League. He played for FC Karpaty Lviv one match in the Premier League on 31 August 2001, as a substitute at the end of the match against FC Hoverla Uzhhorod.[2]

After the 2003–04 season, FC Karpaty Lviv was relegated to the First League, and Karpaty-2 was forced to relegate to the Second League. For that reason Hrytsenko moved to the First League club FC Spartak Sumy. In 2005 he moved to FC Skala Stryi, but the club went bankrupt in the summer of 2006. Together with the coach and some other player he moved the newly formed FC Lviv, replacing FC Skala Stryi in the First League, where he played the 2006–07 season.[2]

The next season, he started playing for SC Korosten (Second League), but moved halfway the season in 2008 to FC Stal Kamianske playing in the First League.[2]

Between 2008 and 2010 he played in the First League for FC Arsenal-Kyivshchyna Bila Tserkva.[3] From then he played for several amateur clubs until 2013.[2]

Hrytsenko lived in the village of Natalivka near Novohrad-Volynskyi. After the beginning of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, he served in the 95th Air Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He died in the Battle of Kharkiv on 22 April 2022 at the age of 43.[4][1][5][6][7]
