Y J Gabriel International Airport (also known as Bacheli Airport) is an upcoming international airport and a greenfield airport under construction at Bade Bacheli in Dantewada district, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Dantewada owned and proposed by Om Sai Airports Private Limited (sister concern of OmSai.Aero, an aviation conglomerate headquartered in Agartala, Tripura).

Bade Bacheli is a town and a Nagar Palika in Dantewada district in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. It is now very well known as NMDC Township with nature all around to explore and witness. It is situated roughly 400 km from Raipur, capital of Chhattisgarh. The way to travel is by Road with frequent bus service from Raipur, Bhilai, Jagdalpur, and Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam or by train from Jagdalpur and Vishakhapatnam.

Timeline[edit]

Planning (2014-2023)[edit]

There was a proposal for setting up a second greenfield airport in Chhattisgarh due to increased demand of fliers from South Bastar from many years, due to large scale mining in the Bailadila Forest Range. Alternate sites like Dantewada and Kirandul were also considered before narrowing down on Bade Bacheli. The project was first announced on 1st August 2023[1] and the press release[2] was released on November 15, 2022[3]. Currently, the fliers from Kirandul, Bacheli and Dantewada areas go to Jagdalpur, Raipur and Hyderabad by road respectively to catch flights which takes anywhere from 7 hours to 20 hours by road. The nearest airport is Jagdalpur which is 120 Km away from the proposed airport site. Further there is no direct train service from Kirandul and Bacheli to Raipur and Hyderabad. Due to increasing medical emergencies and business needs, and for providing connectivity to local residents, 1000s of employees of National Mineral Development Corporation (India's largest, Asia's largest and World's 4th largest, Iron ore producer) and to Paramilitary forces - CISF and CRPF; through air connectivity, the need for an international airport was envisioned. District Administration approved the project in 2023 and both site survey and environmental survey were conducted in the years 2013 and 2014[4] and then in 2023 - October and November months respectively.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is waiting for environmental clearance from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Wildlife after which the technical clearance process will be initiated.

Geographical Data[edit]

Spread across 750 Acres, project site is located 10 Kms from Kirandul (Bailadila), 30 Kms from the District - Dantewada, and 120 Kms from nearest Airport - Maa Danteshwari Airport, Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh.

Ownership and Serviceability[edit]

The Airport will be a privately owned commercial airport. Employees of NMDC and Indian Railways would be the major commuters who will be utilizing the airport along with armed forces (CRPF, CISF) which are active in the district. The Airport will be opened using 1 Runway presently in Phase-1 and is being designed to have 3 Runways in total post completion of construction. T
