Bars Mitzvah is the debut studio album by American rapper BLP Kosher, released on August 4, 2023.[2] Following up on his 2022 mixtape, Blp Kosher And The Magic Dreidel, the album was released with minimal prior announcements. The title of the album is a play on "bar mitzvah", a significant coming-of-age ritual in Judaism, wherein Jewish boys who have reached the age of 13 are considered ready to observe religious precepts and participate in public worship.
The album features guest appearances from Trapland Pat, Luh Tyler and music producer DJ Premier.[2][3]
Background and release
[edit]On February 26, 2023, BLP Kosher took to Instagram to reveal that Bars Mitzvah was in progress and would be coming soon. In an interview with Our Generation Music on April 21, 2023, Kosher provided some insights into the album's sound, stating that it would feature catchy rap songs, as well as expressing his desire to incorporate a vulnerable side into the album.[4] Kosher aimed to give his fans what they desired while showcasing a more personal and introspective aspect of his music. The album's lead single, "Special K," was released on June 23, 2023.
Composition
[edit]Bars Mitzvah is primarily a hip hop album, incorporating elements of Detroit trap, trap and southern hip hop. Surprisingly, the album transitions into emo rap and pop punk towards the end, exploring themes of vulnerability.
Reception
[edit]Bars Mitzvah was met with mixed reviews upon release. Aron A. of HotNewHipHop praised the album, saying "The 19-song project sees the Florida native’s outlandish wordplay and impeccable ear for production take center stage with minimal assistance".[3]
