Be An Angel e.V. is a German non-profit organization supporting refugees in and escaping from conflict and war zones.  It evacuates, provides humanitarian aid and on-the-ground assistance to people in need.

History[edit]

Be An Angel was co-founded by Andreas Toelke [1] and Ulrike Lessing on December 14, 2015.It is headquartered in Berlin, Germany.  At the height of the 2015 refugee crisis in Europe, Toelke,  over a period of six months housed over 400 refugees in his apartment and arranged around 2,000 overnight stays in private accommodations with food and clothing [2],  leading to the inception of Be An Angel e.V.  In recognition of his contributions,  Toelke was honored by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier[1] with the German Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz Am Bande)[13]. Be An Angel leverages the entire spectrum,  from advocacy and official support to job placement [6] and opportunity creation.  From March 2022 to September 2023 Be An Angel evacuated 19,000 Ukrainians and brought over Euro20M in first aid to the country. In 2022 Euro 450,000 were raised by Our Space to Help,  the creation of Klaus Biesenbach,  Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie ([2] in close collaboration with artists Anne Imhof ([3] and Olafur Eliasson ([4] in one event at the Neue Nationalgalerie.  Deutsche Bank Stiftung,  as part of the Our Space to Help initiative added events such as readings and film screenings by Ukrainian artists . Further contributions came from Pelagic Records donating  100% of profits from the double cassette compilation Ukrainian War Refugee Support – A Pelagic Compilation (Vol. I & II)[5] and Premium Group's PEACE merchandise collection again donating 100% of proceeds [10][12}.Artists For Ukraine, an online-only benefit auction organized by Grisebach, one of the premier Berlin Auction Houses promoted Be An Angel's efforts.  Anita Tillman, CEO of Premium Group and Yoram Roth, CEO of Fotografiska ([5] are continuing supporters.

Kreuzberger Himmel is the restaurant founded in 2018 by Be An Angel to showcase the successful integration of refugees:  A team of 13 employees from six countries,  all with a history of escape,  serve their countries delicacies in a continuously booked space for 110 guests.

Friends of Be An Angel[edit]

Friends of Be An Angel,  the non-profit US subsidiary of Be An Angel e.V. was founded in 2022. It currently focuses solely on fundraising to evacuate refugees from the Ukraine to European Union Countries and to deliver humanitarian aid to Ukraine.  Since the beginning of the invasion on February 24, 2022, Anya Verkhovskaya, it's Chairman of the Board has tirelessly worked with donors to receive, purchase, collect, deliver and distribute humanitarian aid including baby food, medications, medical equipment, clothes, childcare products, water purification and filtration systems, ambulances and electrical generators [4}.
