As an Officer in the Royal Swedish Army

[edit]

Aminoff enlisted as a volunteer in the Uusimaa Infantry Regiment at the age of five in 1780. He was promoted to sergeant in 1784, to ensign in 1787, to lieutenant in 1796, and to captain and battalion commander in General Carl Johan Adlercreutz's regiment in 1804. Aminoff participated in the Finnish War from 1808 to 1809 and left the service of the Swedish Army in 1810. During the Finnish War, Russia captured Finland from Sweden.[1]

As an Officer in the Imperial Russian Army in St. Petersburg

[edit]
Aminoff led a regiment at Prince Mikhail Kutuzov's funeral in Saint Petersburg in 1813.

Imperial Russia made Finland a Grand Duchy in 1809. Napoleon's invasion of Russia in June 1812 led to Tsar of Russia, Grand Duke of Finland Alexander I establishing three Finnish Jäger regiments in September. Each regiment had two battalions of 600 soldiers. The Finnish Guard, the military force of the Grand Duchy of Finland, was established by the decision of the Russian Tsar.[5]

Captain Aminoff became the commander of the first battalion of the first Jäger regiment, which was formed in November 1812. Aminoff led the 1st battalion of the Vyborg regiment to Saint Petersburg. The regiment participated in the war of 1812, performing guard duties in the capital of the Russian Empire, St. Petersburg.[5]

Aminoff attended a Te Deum ceremony at the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, which celebrated and honored the Russian army's capture of Berlin in 1813.[5]

Aminoff's regiment participated in the funerals of Prince and Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov and Count and General of Infantry Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt in St. Petersburg in 1813 and 1814. Russian Police Minister Sergey Vyazmitinov praised the regiment's condition, order, and skill after Kutuzov's funeral. The regiment's commanders received recognition from Vyazmitinov.[5]

Aminoff was present when Tsar Alexander I met the first Finnish military unit in St. Petersburg in 1814.[5]

Aminoff was promoted to major in 1813 and to lieutenant colonel in 1814. The ranks of major and lieutenant colonel granted hereditary nobility in the Russian nobility.[1][6][7]

Return to the Grand Duchy of Finland

[edit]

Aminoff and his son were introduced as members of the Finnish House of Nobility in 1818. Aminoff owned the Stor-Backa (Barka) estate in Siuntio and an estate in Tammisaari. Aminoff had a large book collection, which included 713 volumes.[2][8]
