Big Ocean (Korean빅오션) is a South Korean first hearing-impaired boy group under Parastar Entertainment. They debuted on April 20, 2024, coinciding with the Day of Persons with Disabilities in Korea.[1][2]

History[edit]

2024–present: Prior and debut under Parastar Entertainment[edit]

Prior to their debut as idols, all three members received concerns from their acquaintances as they all had full-time jobs. Lee Chan-yeon was working as an audiologist at Korea University Anam Hospital, Kim Ji-seok was a member of the Seoul Disabled Ski Association, and Park Hyun-jin was a well-known YouTuber who documented his daily life with disabilities.[3]

On March 28, 2024, According to the Parastar Entertainment agency, Big Ocean is a three-member group consisting of Lee Chan-yeon, Park Hyun-jin, and Kim Ji-seok. Members sing in Korean Sign Language (KSL), English Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (ISL). The group's name, 'Big Ocean', contains the meaning of 'surprising the world' and the ambition to 'have the potential of the sea and expand to the whole world like the sea.'[4]

Big Ocean begin its official activities by releasing its first digital single 'Glow' on April 20th. 'Glow' is a remake of the song with the same title sung by the first generation idol group "H.O.T.". According to their agency, Big Ocean members recorded songs in their own voice like non-disabled singers. However, some parts received help from A.I (artificial intelligence) that learned each member's voice. Big Ocean plans to perform on stage using sign language.[5]
