The Birmingham Film Festival is a 10-day international film celebration showcasing professional and independent films from around the world. The festival features a wide range of genres, styles, budgets, and topics, with all films screened in a 350-seat auditorium at Millennium Point in Birmingham. Since 2018, all film screenings have been free to attend.[1]

History

[edit]

The festival was established in 2015, with the first edition held in November 2016 at an independent venue in Birmingham. Among the founders were Kevin McDonagh, an award-winning writer, director, and producer, and Dean Williams, a martial arts trainer and stunt performer.[2]

In its first year, Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, became the festival's first patron.[3] After two years in a small venue, the festival moved in 2018 to its current home at Millennium Point.[4]

Events and activities

[edit]

The festival not only screens films but also includes seminars and workshops hosted by industry experts and professionals.[5]

The best films are nominated for over 30 categories, including awards for young filmmakers, local filmmakers, and international filmmakers. Winners receive their awards at the Gala Awards Dinner, a glamorous event attended by celebrities and industry professionals.[6]

Notable members and participants

[edit]

In 2019, producer and advertising expert Trevor Beattie joined the festival's committee after screening two of his own films in that year's program.[7] Notable jury members have included Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran), whose music won the Best Original Soundtrack award at the 2018 awards, Kia Pegg (The Dumping Ground), director Garcia Martin, and BAFTA winners such as Anthony Waldron, Joanna Quinn, Loretta Preece, and Michael B. Clifford.[8]

Recent highlights

[edit]

In 2023, the short film One Note Man won Best Original Score and Best Sound Design, later being shortlisted for a BAFTA and qualifying for the Oscars in 2024.[9]
