From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Broski is a slang term that is a friendly way to refer to a close friend or brother. It’s often used to show camaraderie or affection between friends. [1]Alternate spellings include broskie and brosky.

Etymology[edit]

Broski is a variation of the word “bro.” Bro, short for brother, dates back to the 16th century, although it may have only been used as an abbreviation. Bro comes from African American English and has been used in black churches for at least two centuries. In many churches, most notably black churches, men are often referred to as “brother,” shortened to “bro.”[2]It derives from the Polish or Russian adjectival suffix -ski.[3]It has evolved into a slang term referring to a close and relaxed friend or a brother.[4]

Reception[edit]

Controversy around the gender neutrality of the word is disputed with one side saying that the phrase is only attributed to males[1] while another viewpoint stating that it is gender neutral.[5]
