CE PhoenixCart is a free Open source Ecommerce platform originally started in 2014. CE PhoenixCart is released under the GNU General Public License. It is written in PHP and runs with a MySQL-database. CE PhoenixCart is downloaded with English as a languages and there are seven further languages available for download..[1][2] (Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish).

CE PhoenixCart is free to download and use and can be extended by add-ons both free and paid for. At the website, there are a couple of certified developers[3], from whom it is recommended to seek assistance with custom extension not covered by the available add-ons.

Beside the free version, a "Pro"-version[4] is offered, which contains a great number of paid add-ons along with the possibility to seek help directly from the core-developers of the platform. Without the pro-version, help is available from other users through an open forum.

The ethos of CE PhoenixCart is to deliver a fast and lean platform, build to be easy to extend with various add-ons - either downloaded or bought, or self-made. This means the platform doesn't ship with much more than necessary, so the individual user can shape it after their wishes and wants[5]

History[edit]

CE PhoenixCart began as a "BS" (Bootstrap (front-end framework)) version of OsCommerce in 2014, where the need for a responsive version of the once popular Eccomerce platform wasn't fulfilled by the core-team. That made Gary Burton (Burt) create the osCommerce Community Edition or osComemrce BS-version in 2014[6], where the first task was to add the Bootstrap-framework to the existing front-end code-base, making it possible for store owners to offer af responsive version of existing webshops.

Since the official updates of osCommerce still wasn't coming, the BS-version became a place where old bugs where fixed, as well as further development was added to make the software run on newer versions of PHP. At the same time, the project took the original ethos of osCommerce to heart, and made more areas modular to make it easier for the user to replace and rearrange content without having to dig into the code itself[7].

On July 4th 2019[8] the Community-project was named "Phoenix" and the official name has since become CE PhoenixCart (CE standing for "Community Edition"). During all this time, the platform existed as a semi-official "Community Edition" of osCommerce, but when Holbi Group bought OsCommerce in 2021[9], they didn't want to house CE PhoenixCart: "When we were asked to remove ourselves from the osCommerce umbrella, we became Phoenix [...]" [10]. Thus, CE PhoenixCart moved to its own home, where development continued.

Besides modernisations of the existing code-base, several functions has been moved to add-ons and the use of Hooks as well as a template-system to strengthen the ethos of a simple platform that is easy to extend and build onto[11]

Features[edit]

CE PhoenixCart is ready to use as is. It is possible to edit the text displayed, create categories, products, manufacturers, options/attributes, specials and everything else that is needed and useful for a webshop. It's responsive so it caters for mobile as well as desktop screens. It supports unlimeted languages, categories and products and has a built-in tax-system. Most people, however, might find the need to download and install a payment-gateway to make it possible to accept credit-cards[12][13]
