Carolina Melis was born and raised in Cagliari,[2] Italy.[3][10][11] Her father is Sardinian and mother is Danish.[2] In 1990, at the age of fifteen, Melis left Sardinia to go to boarding school Skolerne i Oure - Sport & Performing Arts in Oure, Denmark for a year.[12] In 1993-1995, Melis attended the United World College of the Adriatic. Melis later moved to to the United Kingdom,[1] where she enrolled in the London Contemporary Dance School and Dartington College of Arts, where she received a B.A. degree in Theatre Arts in 1999.[13] Continuing her studies at the Central Saint Martins, Melis graduated with the Masters degree in Communication Design in 2004 with the main focus on animation and illustration.[3][10][13] Currently, Melis lives with her family in Sardinia, Italy, where she runs an art and design studio.

Career in art[edit]

Upon graduation, Melis shortly worked as a dancer and choreographer before moving into illustration and animation.[3] She changed her career venue and started as a director at Nexus Productions, an animation, film and interactive studio in London.[5][14] While at Nexus, Melis worked on multiple projects in the domain of digital art and video productions including music videos, short films, and commercials for clients ranging from Animal Planet and Prada to Barclays, MTV, the BBC, and Volkswagen, among others.[7][14] Her debut animation film As The Crow Flies that represented Nexus was produced in collaboration with Susanne Flender in 2005.[3][15] Another renown project was an animation video Threeworld, a re-brand for BBC 3, which run across TV, online and in print. In 2010 she created and art directed the identity, set design and title sequence for the reality show the Arrangement, a floral design competition series produced by MTV. The same year Melis wrote and directed the film Le fiamme di Nule, an animated short about weaving in Sardinia, produced by the Institute of Ethnography (ISRE). The film led Melis to the creation of the Mio Karo textile brand dedicated to original craft from Sardinia—composed of blueprints designed by Melis and manufactured by local artisans. The first collection was exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in London in 2011.[2]

In 2013, Melis worked with the US production company Pixomondo and British advertising agency M&C Saatchi in Beijing, where she art-directed Think Blue for 4 months, a fully animated TV commercial for Volkswagen's campaign for the Chinese audience.[1][20][21][22][8]
