Casilda Ramona Benegas de Gallego (April 8, 1907 – June 28, 2022) was a Paraguayan-born supercentenarian and the longest-lived Argentine person verified by the Gerontology Research Group.[1] At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in South America and the fourth oldest living in the world.[2]
Biography[edit]
Benegas was born in 1907 in Trinidad to Patricio Benegas and Asunción Ojeda. She was baptized in the church of Santisima Trinidad, where she married her husband Benigno Gallego Cuenya on April 6, 1945. She then moved to Argentina with her husband,[2] moving through various provinces in the Northern part of the country before settling in Chaco,[3] and worked as a housewife and raised her two children.[4]
In 2000, at the age of 93, she immigrated to Spain, but returned to Mar del Plata in Argentina 13 years later. In December 2020, she contracted COVID-19, and was the second-oldest person to survive the disease.[5] She was later vaccinated for the virus in early 2021.[6]
She died on June 28, 2022 at the age of 115 years and 81 days[5] in a nursing home. At the time of her death, she had grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.[7]
Lifestyle[edit]
Benegas' granddaughter Mayra told reporters that she had never had any serious bouts of illness, and that she did not maintain a strict diet and "ate and took what she wanted." She was also reportedly a very cheerful person.[6] In the final part of her life, she supposedly did not speak much, but often smiled and would occassionally respond in her native Guarani.[8]
