Cerritos High School Model United Nations is a program and four-year pathway class at Cerritos High School, located in Cerritos California. Incoming ninth graders have the option of taking the Model United Nations (MUN) pathway as a substitute for history and civics classes. Students enrolled in MUN at CHS take one class per year, both as a class on Model United Nations and a social science, depending on what year the student is. Freshmen in MUN at CHS take World History/MUN, sophomores take AP Human Geography/MUN, juniors take AP United States History/MUN, and seniors take Civics & Economics/MUN.
Freshmen in MUN typically have little to no experience debating or participating in Model United Nations. Thus, the first half of the academic year for freshmen in MUN at CHS is spent learning the rules and procedures of Model United Nations, following the UNA-USA format. The students prepare for the Cerritos High School Model United Nations Conference (CHSMUN), a conference with novice and advanced committees. This conference is typically held in early October and is run and staffed my juniors and seniors in Cerritos High School's MUN program. The school also hosts The International, an annual conference in May which is attended by many international elementary, middle, and high schools around the world. This conference is both a novice and advanced conference.
Students in Cerritos High School's Model United Nations program partake in several conferences and trips. Students are required to participate as a delegate in four conferences per year. Freshmen typically attend CHSMUN Novice, Mira Costa High School's LAIMUN Novice, Huntington Beach High School's Surf City Novice, and the International Conference. Only freshmen at CHS attend novice conferences. Sophomores can attend Edison High School's Advanced Conference, Huntington Beach High School's Surf City Advanced, Mira Costa High School's LAIMUN Advanced, UC Davis's DMUNC, and UC Berkeley's BMUN if invited by a senior in CHSMUN. Juniors can attend the any of the aforementioned advanced conferences but can also try out for a travel team that attends the National High School Model United Nations Conference (NHSMUN) in New York City. During the trip to NHSMUN, the week prior to the conference is spent sightseeing in New York. Finally, seniors can attend any of the aforementioned advanced conferences with the exception of DMUNC and NHSMUN. However, they can attend VMUN, held in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. During the trip to VMUN, the week prior to the conference is spent sightseeing in Seattle and Vancouver.
