Coleccion de Sermones en Bicol (translated in English as Collection of Sermons in Bicol) by Fr. Francisco Gainza is a full year compilation or forty-two sermons written in Bikolano. It was one of the earliest religious texts published in 1866 by the Establicimiento Tipografico de Santo Tomas [1]. The sermons were written by Friar Pedro de Ávila, a preacher from the town of Canaman. Each sermons were divided into two main sections. The first part delves into biblical stories or passages, drawing connections to the issues or sins prevalent among the indio community. In the second section, the focus shifts to narratives—featuring saints or historical figures grappling with spiritual challenges.

The arrival of The Most Rev. Francisco Gainza, a Dominican friar, in Naga in 1863 had a significant impact on the development of Bicol’s regional identity. At the age of 43, Gainza was appointed as the bishop of the Diocese of Caceres by Queen Isabella II on March 5, 1862. His appointment was later approved by the Holy See in September of that same year [2]. In the time when he served as bishop, many religious manuscripts were published. One of these texts is the Coleccion de Sermones en Bicol, which was published in 1866. This manuscript contains a collection of sermons in the Bikol language and was an important contribution to the training of parish priests and the Christianization process.

Bishop Gainza, emphasized the importance of sermons in guiding the people away from vices and other ungodly practices. He referenced historical figures, including statements from Archbishop Lamberini and Pope Benedict XIV, to underscore the obligation of priests to fulfill their preaching duties in the introduction. The bishop acknowledged the gap created by the lack of written materials in Bicol. As a result, several manuscripts were published including the Coleccion de Sermones en Bicol.

The prevailing theme in the sermon is consistent with the notion of sinfulness and the domination of the devil, apparent to other religious colonial literature in the Philippines.
