I hope you are aware that there are a few articles cited in this Wiki article from reputable sources, including one from Allhiphop[1], which has been an authoritative source for Hip Hop news since 1998. Personally millions of people have seen clean cut men free from drugs and alcohol selling The Final Call Newspaper all over the inner cities of the United States and the printed issues and online editions are widely circulated and highly respected in the Black community. As I recall both Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali both hail from this organization. Are you insinuating that because The Nation of Islam publishes this newspaper, no one in that organization can write a worthy article or film review, and any citation or notability associated with it is automatically invalidated? I read the article about Comin' Up Short in the Final Call Newspaper, and it did not promote anything anti semitic, homophobic, or negative rhetoric or bigotry. This leads me to question why you negatively referred to this publication as the "Nation of Islam's Newspaper," which sounds overtly racist and Islamophobic, especially considering the film is about an ex-gangbanger who changed his life for the better by embracing Islam. Ice Cube, Shorty's bandmate, speaks about this film in a video included in the respected online publication HipHopDX[2], which is also cited in this article. Denying this article because of its subject, Jerome "Shorty" Muhammad, and its highly respected film, would be unjust, as it holds significant encyclopedic value for readers due to its social, political, and cultural significance and notability.

Comin Up short (also Comin' Up Short) is a American feature-length documentary set in South Central Los Angeles. that follows Shorty from Da Lench Mob (Jerome Muhammad) directed by Queen Muhammad Ali and Hakeem Khaaliq. The film received partial support from an ISF Film Grant (Islamic Scholarship Fund) in 2017[3]. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles California, Phoenix Arizona, and post-production was completed in 2021.[4][5][6][7][8]

Synopsis[edit]

Jerome 'Shorty' Muhammad from Da Lench Mob narrates his shift from a deadly gang leader to a gang intervention advocate and Ice Cube's personal protector against N.W.A. threats. In a one-man show format with a single interview, the film merges Shorty's story with reenactments, rare photos, and animation. He reveals how men with military ties supplied artillery to the Crips and Bloods, igniting wars in South Central Los Angeles, and examines the link between the crack epidemic, political attacks on conscious hip-hop artists, and the music industry's role in the promotion of violence and drugs signifying a crucial transformation in the West Coast hip-hop scene.[9][1]

Reception[edit]

Comin' Up Short" received several accolades, including a public screening at the prestigious British Film Institute (BFI) in London, 'Best of the Fest' at the 2021 Hip Hop Film Festival in NYC and 'Best Documentary' at the Sweden Film Awards 2021. It was an official selection at the Pan African Film Festival and a nominee for Best Feature Documentary at the Berlin Lift-Off Film Festival[10]. Theatrical screenings have taken place in cities like Nashville[11], London[12], and Los Angeles, CA.[13]

“You’ll never find a dude that’s more loyal. [Shorty] was our conscience in a lot of ways. He would tell us things like how we should be living, the things that we needed to stay away from,” said Ice Cube who was a friend and bandmate of the film's protagonist.

“Comin’ Up Short’ captures the end of the period in rap I call the ‘glitch in the matrix’ before the White power structure even understood the power of rap and hip hop culture. The documentary was where truth, history, nostalgia, and prophecy intersect for me! Dope!” said Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers.

Logline[edit]

From being a ruthless gang banger, to protecting Ice Cube's life, Shorty from the controversial rap group Da Lench Mob, reveals untold secrets of N.W.A. and why his group was attacked in a race against time to save his own life.
