Curro is a South African independent and co-educational school network. It is the largest independent education provider in Southern Africa, with 178 schools (as of 2022). It provides education for learners from 3 months to Grade 12. The company's headquarters are in Durbanville in the Western Cape province of South Africa.[1][2]

History

[edit]

The former CEO of Curro, Dr Chris van der Merwe started Curro as a school of 28 learners in the hall of the NG Kerk Bergsis in the town of Durbanville, about 28 kilometres north-west of Cape Town. The experiment was nearly not sustainable because he failed to meet his targets for growing learner numbers and he was paying educator out of his bond. However, despite setbacks, van der Merwe later managed build the first Curro campus, Curro Durbanville, himself with 10 bricklayers and 30 labourers, which opened its doors in 1998. Hereafter, Curro has expanded its network of private schools beyond Durbanville to other provinces within South Africa.[3][4]

Structure

[edit]

Curro consists of three units: a pre-primary (3 months to Grade R), primary school (from Grade 1 to 7) and high school (from Grade 8 to Grade 12).
