David Cornell
David Cornell is an English sculptor, coin designer and painter.
David Cornell was born in London[1] in 1935.[2] He studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London and the Harrow School of Art, studying under Roger Hilton[3] and Philip Turner. Cornell also carried out further studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts[4] studying anatomy under Robert Beverley Hale.[5]
Cornell did military service in 42 Commando, Royal Marines from 19XX to 19XX.
Cornell was awarded five Arts Council Awards in XXXX. In 1965 he won a Royal Mint[6] national selection and was appointed coin and medal engraver/sculptor, a position held until 1969. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors[7] in 1971, becoming vice-president of the Society of Portrait Sculptors[8] in 1977. In 1982 Cornell was awarded the Diploma di Merito Universita delle Arti,[9] in Italy.
Cornell is best know for designing the portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales £5 pound coin issued by the Royal Mint in 1999. [10] His other works include a 50p coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the National Health Service issued by the Royal Mint in 1998[11] and the 50p coin for judo minted and circulated in celebration of the 2012 Summer Olympics.[12] In 2000, he was commissioned to sculpt a life-size bronze sculpture of the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which is situated in the public square in Crowborough, East Sussex, UK.[13]
