Deborah S. Brazil is a judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. She is best known for her work as co-prosecutor of the People v. Murray, prosecuting Conrad Murray who was Michael Jackson's personal doctor.

Early Career[edit]

Brazil graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in communications, and worked briefly at NBC and 20th Century Fox, collaborating with television writers. She then went on to get her J.D. at Southwestern Law School. While studying, she worked as a law clerk at the Compton DA’s office, which inspired her to be a prosecutor.[1].
She passed the bar in December 1996 and joined the Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office in 1997 as a deputy district attorney[2]. For her sixteen years with the DA she worked in the Major Crimes Division, the Hardcore Gang Division, and the Family Violence Division[3]. As part of the Major Crimes Division, she and Alan Jackson prosecuted Chalie Samuel for the killing of 17-year-old Lily Burke[4].

Conrad Murray Case[edit]

Along with prosecutor David Walgreen, Brazil represented the people in People v. Murray. In a later interview Brazil mentioned how the international coverage brought extra challenges to the case, since there was the potential for the jurors to be exposed to inadmissible evidence[5]. She and Walgreen were successful in gaining a conviction of involuntary manslaughter[6]. For their work in this case, they both were named Attorney of the Year in Criminal Law, which cited the incredible media coverage as well as the challenge they had in learning about propofol toxicity, which was unknown to both them and the coroner’s office[7].

As a Judge[edit]

In 2013 she was appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Governor Jerry Brown[8]. She currently works at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justic Center in a felony trial court[9]. In 2023 Southwestern gave her the award of Outstanding Judicial Officer, recognizing her work as a DA and Judge, as well as her work as an adjunct professor, and her helping students in foster care apply to college[10]
