Dedalus is a Global healthcare and diagnostics software supplier. The company is based in Milan, Italy and was founded in Florence in 1982 by Giorgio Moretti.

History[edit]

Dedalus initially focused on the Italian market. In the late 1990s, Dedalus started to acquire other Healthcare Information System providers.

In 2011, Mandarin Capital Partners acquired 27% of Dedalus[1] and between 2011 and 2013, the company began to position itself in the MENA ("Middle East & North Africa") region, in South Africa and China.[2][3]

In 2016, Dedalus acquired NoemaLife,[4] a leading European company in the clinical and hospital information systems market.

During the same year, Europe's largest private equity firm Ardian bought 60% of Dedalus[5][6].

Further acquisitions follow. From 2017 to 2019, Dedalus consolidated the French market,[7][8][9][10][11][12] acquiring new companies focused on the diagnostic sector and connected care domain. With the acquisitions Dedalus added quality assurance and laboratory management solutions to its portfolio, as well as solutions dedicated to anatomic pathology, and administrative management software.

In May 2020, Dedalus announced it had acquired part of Agfa HealthCare's healthcare IT branch.[13][14]

Dedalus started 2021 with the acquisition of DXC Healthcare, the healthcare solutions branch of DXC Technology.[15] Dedalus continued by acquiring  Amphi Systems,[16] establishing itself in the market for prehospital care and emergency management solutions. The same year, Dedalus announced it was acquiring two German companies: Dosing GmbH,[17][18][19] a medication safety software provider, and OSM AG,[20] a Laboratory Information Systems provider in Germany. Dedalus then turned to cloud native Entreprise Imaging solutions by acquiring Dobco Medical Systems.[21][22] Later in 2021, Dedalus acquired Swiftqueue,[23][24] a cloud native appointment and scheduling solutions provider, and ix.mid GmbH,[25][26][27] a laboratory communication software company. In its 2021 report on EMR vendors in the Middle East and in Africa, KLAS, a healthcare Information Technology market research organization, noted that most Middle Eastern hospitals had chosen Dedalus solutions between 2015 and 2020.[28] In addition, the report stated that Dedalus had the largest total market share in the Middle East, and Dedalus platforms were used in seven Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In 2022, Dedalus acquired GSG GmbH,[29][30] a company focusing on medical controlling. Dedalus then purchased a majority of shares in Care-Bridge GmbH,[31] a company specializing in patient discharge management solutions. Dedalus also acquired the Healthcare Software Division of Lutech Group,[32] an Italian company and a European player in ICT services and solutions. Dedalus closed 2022 by acquiring ExpertDoc,[33] a clinical decision support software company focussed on general practitioners in the Netherlands. In addition, in 2022, Dedalus became more present in Latin America, including Argentina,[34] and more recently Colombia[35] and Mexico.

Today[edit]

Currently, Dedalus operates in over 40 countries worldwide and has over 7700 employees globally including a team of 2800 employees working on research and development. As of August 2023, its solutions were used by over 6700 healthcare organisations, and 5700 laboratories and diagnostic centres worldwide.[36] In 2022, Dedalus was recognised by KLAS as the leading supplier of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) outside of the United States.[37][38][39][40]

The Name[edit]

According to the company, the name Dedalus[41] is based on Greek mythology, in which Daedalus was known as a great inventor, architect and craftsman. Myth has it that around 2000 B.C., Daedalus designed and built the Palace of Knossos, in Crete, which hides the extraordinary Minotaur's Labyrinth.[42] In Greek, "Daedalus" means "skillfully wrought".[43] The company itself states on its website[44] that "The labyrinth represents the journey to prosperity and the search for knowledge."
