Draft:Derby Shoe

Derby shoe[edit]

The derby shoe is a boot or shoe, but the difference is the eyelet tabs sewn on the vamp part of the shoe. It is a shoe silhouette that originated in the 1800s. The derby shoe is a classic and has many different styles including a variety of laces, leather, shape, and more of the boot design. The many styles allow for the derby to stay in trend being paired with causal and tailored looks.

Eyelets/ Eyelet tabs[edit]

Personal pair found at local thrift store while back, they've became a favorite of mine

One of the differences that make derbies unique is the eyelet tabs and the placement of the eyelets. The eyelet tabs are stitched loosely for comfort and easy access to place your feet in the opening. The eyelets act as a source to place the laces through and allow them to pass through on the surface of the vamp, they are placed on opposite tabs. The tabs are sewn on top of the vamp instead of under, which is why it's called open lacing as there is an opening to where the laces pass over.[1]

Styles/ Silhouettes of derbies[edit]

The derby has many silhouettes which has allowed for many different styles to originate from the complexity of this shoe. Some examples are Savvy River Island brown shoes PS38, which are leather with brogue detail all over, with a sole rubber. Airflex leather Derby shoes PS59, Marks & Spencer, these are more simple with a custom made sole attached. SPLURGE Tan leather Derby shoe PS149, Hawes & Curtis, this pair is the "classic" tan color with a hole-like design on the toe box. The next silhouette is a pair called Shoes, Day (Bluchers), made by Paolo Yantorny. He describes them as "White suede pair of bluchers; elongated point toe; three-eyelet tie; medium stacked Cuban heel in black leather; straight toe cap; heel foxing forms border around quarters; heavily padded tongue; welt sole; high arch; wide braided silk shoelace; reddish-brown varnished wood; gold-tone metal pull ring in rope design". Lastly, worn during Chanel's fashion show in Cuba, are Lambskin-calfskin-and-goatskin slip-on mules. They have golden eyelet tabs; white vamp; black glossy toe box.

Different uses[edit]

The many different silhouettes of derbies have given inspiration to many shoemakers, even for some shoes completely unrelated to the formal and other words dress look of them. The shoe going to be mentioned is "Quoc Pham Derby shoe", by Quoc Pham. They are bicyclists shoes made from the inspiration of the derby silhouette. ", "With the Derby, they don't look like cycling shoes at all".The rough-out suede upper is joined to a white rubber wedge outsole that looks construction zone ready. Pham wanted to make a comfortable, but stylish shoe for bicyclists and were a huge success.
