Jackson Chua Eng Seng (Chinese: 蔡永胜; pinyin: Cài Yǒngshèng) was a 19-year-old Temasek Polytechnic student who was last seen on 28 February 1999.
Background[edit]
Jackson Chua was the eldest of three sons in his family. The Chua family had moved to a flat in Sengkang sometime in 1998.
Disappearance[edit]
On 28 February 1999, 19-year-old Jackson Chua left his home in Sengkang to try out the newly introduced SBS bus service 88. He also suggested that he might make a detour to Orchard Road. After leaving, he was never seen again.
At the time of his disappearance, he was a third-year computer engineering student at Temasek Polytechnic.[1][2]
Search[edit]
Jackson's family and friends started putting up missing person posters in English and Chinese. They covered an extensive area with the posters, including much of Sengkang where Jackson lived, Tampines and Orchard where Jackson frequented, and every bus stop along the route of bus service 88. In all, over 100 people volunteered to put up the posters. They also published notices on the English and Chinese newspapers appealing for information.[3][4]
Investigations showed that Jackson had been active on the Internet Relay Chat (IRC), and had been in regular contact with two individuals. One of them, a man who lived in Toa Payoh, initially denied knowing Jackson, however Jackson's phone number was found in his diary; only then did he admit knowing Jackson through the IRC. He was questioned by the police, however they did not find any conclusive leads from him.
Two months after Jackson's disappearance, his family continued to page him at least eight times a day.[4]
On an unknown date sometime in 2002, at about 2am, a neighbour who lived at a block opposite the Chuas in Sengkang reported seeing a man behaving strangely outside the Chuas' flat. The man appeared to have walked in the wrong direction, then turned around and stood outside the Chuas' front gate for about 20 minutes before leaving. As word about the neighbour's sighting went around, the Chuas decided to go to her to verify the story. They also brought along a photo of Jackson, and the neighbour positively identified Jackson as the man she saw that night. However, the man never showed up again.[5]
Aftermath[edit]
In 2005, the disappearance of Jackson Chua was portrayed on Singaporean television series Missing on the ninth episode of its second season.[4]
