The podcast explores pressing global economic issues with a focus on diverse perspectives and deep analysis. Since its launch in 2022, it has gained recognition for its insightful discussions and has helped to bring a new voice from Bangladesh to the global economics stage.[1][2]

Overview

[edit]

Dollar Dialogue is a podcast that aims to dive into major economic issues worldwide, providing listeners with comprehensive analyses. Episodes range from discussions on Greece's austerity measures to the economic crisis in Venezuela. The hosts emphasize presenting these topics in an accessible manner, making complex economic theories relatable to everyday experiences.[1]

[edit]

Dollar Dialogue's notable episodes include:

  • "Venezuela's Economic Crisis: A Failure of Socialism or the Result of U.S. Sanctions" — This episode discusses the economic and political reasons behind Venezuela's collapse, analyzing the impact of both domestic policies and international sanctions.[1][5][6]
  • "The British Brexit Bet: Sovereignty or Economic Suicide" — A detailed examination of the effects of Brexit on the UK economy, evaluating its long-term consequences.[1][7][8]
  • "BRICS vs. G7: Competing Economic Models and Global Influence" — The episode compares the economic structures and influence of BRICS and G7 countries, highlighting their strengths and global positioning.[1][9][10]

"Big Brothers & Their Economies" Series

[edit]

The "Big Brothers & Their Economies" series focuses on the economic policies of authoritarian leaders such as Suharto, Francisco Franco, and Joseph Stalin. The hosts explore how these leaders shaped their countries' economic paths and the long-term impact of their decisions.[1]

Hosts

[edit]

Araf Malik

[edit]

Araf Malik is instrumental in directing the content of Dollar Dialogue, bringing a strong background in economics. He completed Harvard Summer School with top grades in microeconomics and macroeconomics, attended the Economics for Leaders Program at Yale, the Wharton Global Youth Program at University of Pennsylvania, and the Politics, Law & Economics Program (PLE) at Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS). In 2024, Araf's team won the Best Risk Management Award at the Wharton Global Youth Competition.[1][11]

Araf Malik at a TEDx Event

Araf is also well-versed in Model United Nations (MUN), having participated in conferences in 7 countries. He served as the Assistant Director of the Arab League at Harvard MUN Australia in 2023 and chaired several conferences, including IASAS MUN Taipei and DoverMUN in Singapore. His experience with public speaking, negotiation, and diplomacy translates into the podcast, where he breaks down complex economic topics.[11][12]

Araf is also an independent researcher. His study, "Federal Reserve's Influence Over the Bangladeshi Taka," published in the South Asian Journal of Social Studies & Economics, highlights how U.S. monetary policy affects the Bangladeshi currency. Despite Bangladesh's robust economic growth, the study indicates that U.S. interest rates have significant repercussions for the Taka, making the economy vulnerable to international shifts.[11][12]

Arib Malik

[edit]
Arib Malik at a TEDx Event

Arib Malik, another co-host, also studied at Harvard Summer School and gained credits in economics. He started his academic journey at Columbia University and further honed his skills at Yale's FTE program. Arib's TEDx talk on financial literacy, titled "Breakthrough in Financial Education for the Youth," emphasized the need for early financial education among young people, covering topics such as budgeting, saving, and investing.[13][14][15]

Arib participated in a stock market competition at Columbia University, which further ignited his passion for finance. His participation in the Yale Economics for Leaders (FTE) program equipped him with a strong foundation in economics and leadership.[15]

Arib is dedicated to promoting financial education among the youth. His TEDx talk focused on empowering young people with the knowledge needed to navigate the financial world effectively, and his contributions to Dollar Dialogue align with this mission.[1][15]

Shahzaib Karim

[edit]
Host of Dollar Dialogue, Shahzaib Karim

Shahzaib Karim has a deep interest in economics and finance, strengthened by his experience working in his family business. His real-world experience allows him to bring a practical perspective to Dollar Dialogue, making complex economic concepts more accessible.[1]

Shahzaib also has a strong interest in public policy and its economic impacts. His insights into how policy decisions affect both businesses and individuals help ground the podcast's discussions in real-world applications.[1]

Global Perspective

[edit]

Dollar Dialogue features perspectives from around the world, frequently hosting guests from countries such as the United States, Italy, and South Sudan. The podcast aims to provide a broad view of economic issues by incorporating a variety of international insights. Dollar Dialogue is the first-ever English Bangladeshi economics podcast, and it's already amplifying Bangladesh's voice in global economic conversations.[1][2]

The Curious Case of the Bangladeshi Taka Devaluation

[edit]

Araf Malik contributed a study titled "Federal Reserve's Influence Over the Bangladeshi Taka," published in the South Asian Journal of Social Studies & Economics. The research explores why the Bangladeshi Taka has steadily weakened against the U.S. Dollar despite impressive economic growth in Bangladesh.[12][16]

The study suggests that fluctuations in U.S. interest rates significantly influence the Taka's value, making the Bangladesh economy susceptible to global financial shifts. Comparisons with other South Asian currencies indicate that the Taka's performance is more vulnerable to U.S. policies due to Bangladesh's reliance on dollar-denominated debt.[12][16]

Impact

[edit]

Contributions to Economic Education

[edit]
Three Hosts of Dollar Dialogue (Araf Malik, Arib Malik & Shahzaib Karim)

By discussing current events and historical economic trends, the hosts aim to make economics accessible and engaging. Araf and Arib Malik, through their TEDx talks and podcast content, emphasize financial literacy, providing insights into global finance and economic policies that impact daily life.[1][13][14][17][18][19][20]

Elevating Bangladesh's Role in Global Economic Discussions

[edit]

In a space traditionally dominated by Western voices, Dollar Dialogue offers a fresh perspective from Bangladesh. The podcast highlights the capabilities of young Bangladeshi economists and demonstrates how they can contribute meaningfully to international discourse. Through well-researched discussions and diverse viewpoints, Dollar Dialogue is helping to put Bangladesh on the map in global economics.[1]

Reception

[edit]

The podcast has been positively received, both locally and internationally. Dollar Dialogue's ability to present balanced takes on complex economic issues, along with its diverse guest list, has garnered praise.[1]
