Donore Parish

[edit]

Donore Parish is a Catholic parish located in County Meath, Ireland. It encompasses the village of Donore, a small community situated in the historic Boyne Valley, not far from the famous Brú na Bóinne heritage site and the town of Drogheda. The parish forms part of the Diocese of Meath and is administratively linked with nearby parishes such as Duleek Parish.

Location

[edit]

The village of Donore lies approximately 4km west of Drogheda and about 18km from Navan, in a region rich with archaeological and historical significance. Donore is positioned along the road between Drogheda and Brú na Bóinne, which is renowned for the nearby Newgrange and Knowth passage tombs.

Historically known as Dun Uabair, meaning “The Fort of Pride,” the village’s name suggests that its foundation dates back to the early Christian period (400-1200 AD), likely indicating the presence of a ring fort in the vicinity.

History

[edit]

Donore, historically referred to as Dunower, has long been a small but significant settlement in the Boyne Valley. Its proximity to the Brú na Bóinne site has tied the village to Ireland’s ancient and medieval history. Over the past two decades, Donore has seen rapid population growth, expanding from 334 residents in 2002 to 760 residents in 2016.

The Catholic Church of the Nativity of Our Lady (commonly referred to as St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church) is located in the heart of Donore village. The church was built around 1840 and remains the spiritual center of the parish.
