Edison Zhong is an Chinese-American esports organizer and entrepreneur, best known as the Founder of EZ Esports.[1], a nonprofit high school esports league in New York City. Zhong established the league in 2021 to provide a structured esports environment for students, drawing from his own experiences in various extracurricular activities such as bowling, handball, and debate. His esports initiative has expanded to include numerous schools across the five boroughs, creating the largest platform for student engagement in esports in New York City. As of August 2024, Zhong is attending the University of Southern California on a full scholarship, where he is majoring in Economics and Data Science.[2]

High school career

[edit]

Zhong attended Midwood High School from 2018 to 2020, where he played on the handball team that earned second place in the 2019 PSAL New York City playoffs. In 2020, he transferred to Susan E. Wagner High School, where he achieved significant accolades, including becoming the PSAL New York City champion bowler[3], the rank 1 handball player[4], and a member of the debate team, graduating top of his class in 2022. Zhong's active involvement in extracurricular activities shaped his understanding of the benefits of structured group engagements. Observing the positive impact of these experiences, Zhong recognized the potential for esports to offer similar community and developmental advantages to students. This insight led him to found the Wagner Esports Club, which quickly grew to nearly 200 members[5], setting a record for the most active club at the school.[6]

Founding EZ Esports

[edit]

During his senior year at Susan E. Wagner High School, Zhong sought to create a NYC Department of Education-sanctioned esports league but was denied. Undeterred, he founded EZ Esports in 2021[7], which quickly became the largest high school esports league in New York City.[6] Initially starting with 14 schools, the league has since expanded to 30 schools across all five boroughs, serving approximately 5,000 students.[6] EZ Esports provides a platform for high school students to engage in interschool competitive gaming with a structure that mirrors traditional scholastic sports leagues.[8] Some of the esports that EZ Esports organizes includes VALORANT, League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Minecraft, and Tetris. Today, EZ Esports live-broadcasts and coordinates over 300 esports matches annually, and has formed notable collaborations with major organizations including Nike, Gen.G, Moonton, and the NYC Department of Education, the largest school district in the United States.[2]
